James Herriot Country
The Yorkshire Dales are inseparable from the writing of James Herriot — the pen name of veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, whose beloved books brought the landscapes, characters, and spirit of the Dales to readers around the world. His practice in Thirsk, the market town he called Darrowby, sits at the heart of our Dales Heritage Collection.
Walking these hills and valleys, it's easy to see what inspired him. The stone walls, the farmsteads, the wide open skies — it's all still here, exactly as he described it.
